Dyna­mic Active Bending
Dig Des Fab 17

Semi­nar ‚Digi­tal Design and Full Scale Fabri­ca­tion’ (Dig Des Fab) is taught at Univer­sity of Applied Arts in Vienna, Insti­tute of Archi­tec­ture, Depart­ment of Struc­tu­ral Design during Winter Semes­ter 2017/2018.

During a 5‑day long course students focu­sed on the crea­tion of controll­able, dyna­mic, active-bendin­­­­­­g ­­­­­­­ti­­­­­­m­­­­­­­ber struc­tures using loads as the actua­tors. The parti­ci­pants expe­ri­men­ted with linear wooden ­ele­ments (laths), where the over­all defor­ma­tion of the sys­tem is defi­ned by the milled geome­try between them. The course combi­ned digi­tal simu­la­ti­ons for form finding (Kang­a­roo) and struc­tu­ral analy­sis (Karamba) with physi­cal proto­ty­pes fabri­ca­ted by robo­tic milling. The final outcome is a 1:1 grid-shel­l ­s­­­­­­­­­­­­t­­­­­­­­­­­­­ruc­­­­­­­­­­­­­ture fabri­ca­ted in flat pieces and later self-asse­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­m­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­bled into a double curved surface under the applied loads.
